While I work with many fiction and nonfiction genres, please note that I am not a good fit for projects containing erotica or graphic violence.
Developmental Edit
This edit is performed during earlier stages of a manuscript’s creation and development, ideally after the author has taken their manuscript through at least one round of critique and self-revision. During a developmental edit, I analyze all major structural elements, including plot and story arc, character development and arc, setting and/or worldbuilding, dialogue, pacing, and genre fit. My feedback is delivered in the form of in-text comments as well as a detailed editorial letter (7+ pages) discussing the strengths of the manuscript and opportunities for improvement, offering in-depth analysis as well as possible solutions. A one-hour follow-up consultation is included with this service.
Manuscript Review
Also known as an Editorial Assessment or Manuscript Critique, a Manuscript Review examines the same broader issues as a Developmental Edit, but with a less systematic, less comprehensive touch. This is a great option for authors who desire a pre-developmental edit for earlier drafts of their manuscript, who have already taken their manuscript through a full developmental edit and are looking for a follow-up review, or who have taken their manuscript through several rounds of critiques and revisions and are confident in their self-revision skills. My feedback is delivered in the form of in-text comments and an editorial letter (3-5 pages) discussing the manuscript’s most noticeable opportunities for growth. A thirty-minute follow-up consultation is included with this service.
Line Edit
When an author is firm on all structural elements of their manuscript, they’re ready for a line edit. During a line edit, I analyze and rework the prose at the sentence and paragraph level, paying special attention to style, clarity, structure, flow, word choice, concision, and consistency. All changes will be tracked, giving the author the chance to accept or reject each suggested rephrase. Please note that this service does not include comprehensive grammatical corrections, although I might occasionally flag or rework some grammatical issues.
Copy Edit
Once an author’s manuscript has been edited for style, it’s time to comb through the manuscript for grammatical errors, punctuation errors, spelling errors, and simple factual errors (dates, calculations, etc). During a copy edit, I’ll also format the manuscript according to the author’s chosen style guide (such as the Chicago Manual of Style). All changes will be tracked, giving the author the chance to accept or reject each suggested correction. Please note that this service does not include rephrasing for style, although I might flag prose that has potential for more development.
